Choosing the Right Material for Vacuum Casting
One of the versatile processes of prototyping is vacuum casting. Because it has a wide range of properties that can be generated in the component. Product designer and design engineers prefer this prototyping process to use in developing the product.
The appearance and properties should closely mimic the component which could be manufactured from high-performance products and engineering polymers like polycarbonate, nylon, ABS, elastomers, and polypropylene.
It is hard to match your desired property characteristic with your chosen material, it's because there are lots of materials to choose from. The wide range of casting materials replicates the specific requirements of the designer for the thermal, physical, and thermal properties which parts should show.
Some of the materials used in vacuum casting are rubbers, resins, and thermoplastics. These materials can emulate the properties and characteristics of particulate including the level of rigidity, strength, physical appearance, flexibility, UV stability, transparency and others.
You can apply vacuum casting in various range. The process is used by engineers working on a different spectrum of industries such as aerospace and automotive, medical and pharmaceutical, engineering and telecommunications even in food production and consumer goods.
Rubber / Elastomers
It is one of the most flexible materials that is used in casting. The material is best for gaskets or seals because of its durability. It's because of this many people would prefer rubber in replicating components using the casting process. Among the different materials used in casting this is one of the cheapest and used widely. The most common types of rubber used include UPX8400, F141, and F126.
Durable Polycarbonates
Polycarbonates are popular particularly if it requires high shock resistance. It can withstand very high or low temperatures. It likewise comes with an appealing translucence look.
Polypropylene
For an industry that requires plastic for their components, polypropylene is the materials used for vacuum casting. It is easily available and quite affordable. This material is ideal to produce durable goods and robust parts. Some of the products that use polypropylene include utensils, toys, housewares, laboratory, and medical equipment.
Polypropylene is the second most widely used material in vacuum casting. It is a thermoplastic polymer resin having a semi-crystalline structure. With its durability and impressive characteristics, polypropylene has been used in various industries.
One of the reasons these materials are used for this process is because of its durability and easy to form characteristics. Also, because the products made of these materials are reusable and can be created into new items.
